Cracks in grout can be source of water leaks: The Weekly Fix. If you see stains on the ceiling below your bathroom, don’t assume it’s from a leaking water or drain pipe. This tile needs periodic maintenance; cracks can develop in the grout between the tiles, allowing moisture to seep through.
Contrary to popular belief, ceramic tile and grout, by themselves are not waterproof. Water can penetrate through cement-based grout and work its way through the substrate. To prevent water damage, you must install a waterproof membrane just below the tile bonding mortar as close to the tile as possible.
Soggy grout leaves the finished joints weak and prone to cracking or crumbling, as well as to efflorescence, a chalky, white appearance. If your grout is runny or too wet, add additional dry grout to the mixture until it reaches the proper consistency for use.
Leaky tiles can occur anywhere where water is used, whether it’s a shower, a wet room or a kitchen splashback. They can often cause damp and mould within surfaces behind tiles, and can even threaten the structural integrity of walls.
So it’s important to tackle the issue at the first sign of a leak. The first thing that needs to be done when regrouting a shower is to remove all of the old dirty and moldy grout and caulk.
After you have applied the grout to one section of the shower then wipe the tiles clean with a sponge. If you don’t seal your grout, it will absorb water, bacteria and stains. Adding a grout sealer protects your grout so it’s waterproof and will repel moisture and germs.
Sealing the grout helps prolong the look, texture and consistency of your grout and it prevents mildew and mold. The final step to repair shower tile after a leak detection is to fill the gap along the top of the tub.
Or shower with silicone caulk and protect all grout joints with a liquid silicone sealer. Use a sharp razor knife to scrape off any old, dried caulk and soap residue from the top edge of the bath or shower base.
